I've spent the last couple of months working with a talented team to get a new service off the ground. Called Doing Good For Nothing, we aim to provide targeted capacity building services to a local not-for-profit or social enterprise. We're going to find an organization that needs help, then work on their issue during an event in November 2014. All for free!
Royal Roads University has been on the Development Action radar since we launched in Canada back in 2012. The Masters of Global Leadership program has been a particular interest to both Kath and I. RRU's new MA program aims to fill a gap for those who want traditional leadership training fine-tuned for the particular arena of working in NGOs engaged in international development.
Having worked internationally since 1996, and spending a lot of that time working in the international development field supporting NGO networks, this is a great opportunity to reflect on experience and translate that into MA level curriculum. I will be developing curriculum alongside Wendy Rowe and Eduardo Rivas, focusing on three course areas:
The pilot phase of Citizenship 101 has begun rolling out across communities in BC. An initiative developed by the Victoria Immigrant Resource Centre Society (VIRCS), the program helps immigrants to Canada move from permanent residence status to full fledged Canadian citizenship.
Development Action Director Kathleen Manion has received a flood of interest from both Royal Roads University and Vancouver Island University.
It's been a busy few months!
Date and time: Saturday 27 April, 9:30am - 4pm
Venue: Maritime Museum Courtroom, 28 Bastion Square Victoria
Cost: $30 (includes inspiring conversation, lunch, tea and coffee)
During November 2012, Development Action and Directis Consulting undertook a brief survey to explore recent changes to the administration of employment programs in BC. We contacted most of the organizations who had been sub-contracted through the Employment Program of British Columbia (EPBC) on Victoria Island and collected anonymous responses.
I'm really excited to be asked to participate in the creation of a co-working space in the heart of Victoria City. Timely? I think so.
With the aid of key community contacts (namely Catherine Etmanski of Royal Roads University and Colleen McCormick at the Ministry of Social Development and the Social Innovation Hub) the Development Action team has found itself involved in a series of fantastic initiatives.
