The pilot phase of Citizenship 101 has begun rolling out across communities in BC. An initiative developed by the Victoria Immigrant Resource Centre Society (VIRCS), the program helps immigrants to Canada move from permanent residence status to full fledged Canadian citizenship.
Citizenship 101 is structured as a ten session series of workshops. Good citizenship is stressed alongside the facts and figures which need to be learned prior to the Canadian citizenship test. The program is currently in a pilot phase, but the uptake and interest from communities across BC is already becoming clear. A Canada-wide roll out for Citizenship 101? Let's hope so. There is a definite need for a program like Citizenship 101.
Lee Sentes and Kathleen Manion helped with the production of print resources for Citizenship 101. This included plain English editing and digital layout of all handbooks and MS Powerpoint presentations. It was a great experience which allowed Lee and Kath to flex different skill sets (and finally learn how to properly use Scribus, the free desktop publisher).
Citizenship 101 is supported through a grant from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Find out more on the VIRCS website.
